It was unknown whether Voldemort would go after the Longbottoms or the Potters in his attempt to avert the prophecy, and on Halloween night two things happened almost simultaneously. Voldemort attacked and killed Frank and Alice Longbottom, marking Neville as the Chosen one, and sent the Lestranges to the Godric's Hollow (on Peter Pettigrew's intel) to kidnap Lily Potter and Sirius Black. They were intended to be used to disrupt and distract the Order rather than killed outright, and even after Voldemort's "death" by rebounding curse, the Lestranges followed their Lord's orders, but in hiding and in secret. The Lestranges, Sirius, and Lily returned to Grimmauld Place where the Lestranges systematically destroyed some of their memories and put them under Imperius to make them believe they were married and that James and Remus were after them because of that. AU DEVIATION POINT: Halloween 1981 CANON-PUNCTURABLE: Yes LINK TO CANON INFORMATION: here ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good PERSONALITY: Sirius is a divided person, split into the boy he was and the man his cousin has worked on molding him into. The pressure of constant dark magic and mind manipulation has eschewed Sirius' personality. He is perpetually on edge right now, often springing from one emotion or mood to the next. It takes little to set him off, and it's incredibly difficult to predict how he will react to something. Sirius used to be a fairly easy person to get along with. He still does typically exude a laid back, lazy air. Very rarely does he seem to take anything with an air of gravity. This trait has become exacerbated by his isolation, however. It results in a certain air of arrogance, where instead of behaving as if he doesn't care about anything, he comes off seeming superior. In addition, he comes off seeming a bit of out of touch with the world around him, content to fall back upon his own ideals and schemes instead of dealing with the reality that's around him. While he's still somewhat extroverted, he's nowhere near as friendly as he used to be. He's often content to remain mostly in Lily's or Bellatrix's company. He can now be on his own for days on end, really, before even realizing that he hasn't seen another human being. On the occasion that he does seek out some form of human companionship, he can still charm someone easily, falling back on old habits. While it still seems as if he can get along with anyone, he doesn't really let anyone get close to him anymore. He'll be with people for a night and never works on culminating anything resembling friendships. In short, he's fashioned himself to need as few people as possible, unwilling to formulate any attachments that can either be used in betrayal, or be used to hurt him. His rebellious nature is still quite pervasive. This indulgence tends to lead to him being brash. As the hat saw in him when he was younger, Sirius has little mind for being cunning. He prefers to take all problems, all things, head on. When he was younger, he had little patience, and in that regard, he's a bit better. He can plan things out long term now, but still has the tendency to act on impulse. He's a man of action rather than a man of thought, still. One part of Sirius that he can't ever seem to get rid of, and which, stems directly from his family's "darkness" is his temper. He can be nearly explosive when he's angry, with a definite tendency toward some violence. He's stubborn when he becomes like this and nearly refuses to see reason – there are very few people that can actually have a logical discussion with him when he's immensely angry. Due to this fact, Sirius also tends to hold immense grudges. It becomes very difficult for him to even consider forgiveness when he feels betrayed, but also has little problem with stereotyping an entire group of people merely to facilitate his own anger or discriminations. This side of him is one that he often has little control over. And, without any doubt, his own sense of darkness has become worse as he's been left to linger aside Bellatrix and trapped inside Grimmauld Place. His mental instability has led him to explore more Dark Arts, which, becomes a circle that turns round and round. He's obsessive in his need to protect Lily -- and in his need to formulate ways to exact revenge upon James and the rest of the Order. It would be fair to say that he's developed a side to him that has the propensity to be quite cruel and does desire bloodshed. He does have his rare moments when there's a gleam of his old self, where he is truly carefree and is able to smile. Those moments usually come when he's just with Lily, and they're outside of Grimmauld Place -- or when they're riding the motorbike together. It's like how everything was supposed to be, when he's able to separate himself from all that darkness that has ensnared their lives. Additionally, there are quite a few moments where things start to break to the surface -- old memories, old feelings. He's often caught off balance by these, not certain what's triggered them. He'll see a book or catch a glimpse of someone with messy black hair and he'll be disorientated for the entire day. He's never quite certain what to do when these situations arise, and often before he's even connected what's happened, Bellatrix will take care of it. But that doesn't mean that Sirius' mind still isn't fighting to regain control of itself. ASSETS: Sirius is incredibly talented and innovative when it comes to magic. Brought up in an old wizarding family, he had early access to magic and by the time he arrived at Hogwarts, a certain ease with learning nearly anything that came his way. There were few things in the lessons that arrived him any real challenge -- and Sirius Black enjoyed a challenge. Through the Marauders, he learned to do plenty of things that many wizards probably would have thought were impossible for someone his age, such as creating the Marauder's Map, or becoming Animagi, or mixing a Muggle bike with magic. At Grimmauld Place, he's continued to press himself, this time tinkering with Dark Magic -- which includes runes tattooed on his body to amplify some nasty spells and magic to defend his mind. He's absolutely steadfast in his loyalty, which is really at the root of everything that's happened to him. Bellatrix is using that to tie him to her and Lily, but it also perpetually threatens to bring him back to James an Remus. He has a good sense of humor that even being trapped in Grimmauld Place hasn't managed to break. LIABILITIES: Sirius is stubborn as hell. He's absolutely single-minded when he wants to be, which is easily what led him to leaving his family in the first place and is probably the best trait for Bellatrix to play upon. He's temperamental and moody and, when provoked enough, can have the tendency to be cruel or even violent. Because of spending too much time with the Lestranges, he can also be incredibly distrustful. He keeps other people at a distinct distance. INVENTORY: Sirius comes from March 27, 1984, about two and a half years after he was kidnapped and a few months before his 25th birthday. He's wearing a white T-shirt, black leather jacket, pair of denims, and his motorcycle boots. Both his arms are bandaged on account of the fact that he tattooed them both (with help) just this morning. His wand is in his back pocket. WRITING SAMPLE: an old thread!
